Matthew Akers is an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning film director, producer, cinematographer, and photographer. He is best known for the critically acclaimed documentary Marina Abramovic: The Artist is Present (2012), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and aired on HBO. He directed the highest rated ABC primetime special of 2013, David Blaine: Real or Magic, and the highest rated primetime special of 2016, David Blaine: Beyond Magic.
He is currently directing and executive producing a documentary feature film about David Blaine, as well as a five-part documentary series about fighter pilots.
Akers has shot and produced several documentary television series, including the 10-part series Carrier (2008), during which he lived on an aircraft carrier deployed in the Persian Gulf for six months, and Circus (2010), for which he spent a year on the road traveling with the Big Apple Circus.
In addition, he has produced and shot feature documentaries about blindness, guns, disease, spies, drugs, prisons, hackers, soldiers, athletes, politicians, musicians, theater, and more.
He was born and raised in Dallas, Texas and studied fine art and sculpture at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
